Las Meninas
Artist: Diego Velázquez
Stand in front of Diego Velázquez's Las Meninas and you meet a room full of people, each looking somewhere different. The painter places the young Infanta Margarita Theresa at the centre of her household, and puts himself at the easel, while the king and queen appear only in a mirror. This docent's tour explains what is happening, who the figures are, and why the mirror at the back changes how we read the whole scene.
