## Summary

A woman strides forward over a barricade, and a painting turns a street fight into a national symbol. This is the story of a work made in the heat of 1830, and what it asks us to see.

## The story

### Passage passage-1

Role: hook. Evidence: observation.

She is barefoot, and she is not running away. A woman steps over broken timbers and fallen bodies, the French tricolor held high in one hand and a bayonet in the other. Around her, men look up or turn back toward the smoke. The painting puts us at the base of a barricade, close enough to feel the forward push.

### Passage passage-2

Role: looking. Evidence: observation.

Look at the ground first. Fallen figures and discarded clothing fill the foreground, a scatter of what has just happened. Behind the advancing group, smoke rises and a distant city skyline appears. The woman is the brightest shape, but the painting is not only about her. It is about the space between the dead and the living, and about who keeps moving.

### Passage passage-3

Role: context. Evidence: documented.

The painting is titled Le 28 juillet 1830. La Liberté guidant le peuple, and it was made in 1830 by Eugène Delacroix. That date in the title is the date of the July Revolution in Paris, the three-day uprising that ended the reign of Charles X. Delacroix was not painting a distant history. He was painting events close to his own moment.

### Passage passage-4

Role: turn. Evidence: documented.

But the work did not go straight to a museum wall. The French state decided to purchase it in August 1831, and it only arrived at the museum in 1874. Between those dates, the painting moved through political changes and institutional hands. It is now held by the French state and assigned to the Musée du Louvre, Département des Peintures, and the Louvre places it in the Romanticism section.

### Passage passage-5

Role: closing. Evidence: interpretation.

So the barefoot woman is not a witness we can interview. She is an image made to carry a public idea, and the painting itself has had a public life of its own. When we stand before it, we are looking at 1830 through a later museum frame, and at a symbol that keeps being asked to speak for the present.

Literature coverage is accumulating. Finding or cataloguing a publication does not mean it has been consulted. A missing consultation status is not recorded. The record does not claim that all literature has been found.

## Evidence limits

This copy contains the published record held by ArtifactArchive. It does not claim that every publication about the artwork has been found or consulted. A bibliography link does not establish support for every claim.

Evidence labels describe the recorded claim type. A source link does not certify verification. Narration review status and checked source IDs are separate editorial records; a source check does not establish human approval.

Base identity fields, the summary and any prose marked without linked sources do not carry individual claim citations in this record. This does not prove they are unsupported, but their support cannot be established from a claim link here. Missing information remains unrecorded; do not fill it in as fact.

Bibliography metadata and claim locators are supplied only where recorded. Missing authors, dates, editions or pages must remain unknown. Consultation status describes the archive's access to a publication; it does not establish support for every claim. Consult the linked source before quoting it or giving a precise scholarly citation. Images and external sources retain their own rights and licences.
